America decides foreign robots are a security risk, not a gadget

The Federal Communications Commission banned imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, quadruped “robot dogs,” and certain connected power inverters after national security officials warned they pose “unacceptable risks” to the United States.

The order adds these devices to the FCC’s Covered List, a catalog of hardware judged too risky to receive the equipment authorization needed to be sold or imported into the country. This step instantly shuts most foreign robot makers out of the U.S. electronics market for future models.

The ban does not yank robots already here off the streets or out of warehouses. It applies mainly to new or not-yet-authorized devices, leaving existing models untouched for now. That detail tells you something important: regulators are not reacting to a single disaster.

They are trying to cut off future dependence before foreign robots become woven deeply into logistics, policing, and even home life. Once those systems take root, pulling them out would be painful, slow, and politically explosive.

Why advanced robots worry security officials

National security officials focus on how modern robots work, not just how they look. These machines pack cameras, microphones, lidar, and other sensors, are constantly connected to networks, and receive software updates over the air.

A White House task force concluded that foreign-built robots could create cybersecurity risks that threaten critical infrastructure and the safety of U.S. residents. The concern is simple in concept: any device that moves through sensitive spaces and phones home can become a rolling surveillance unit.

Federal officials warn that advanced robotic devices gather data that malicious actors could use to surveil Americans, enhance foreign intelligence services, or remotely take control of the robots. Think about a humanoid robot working in a data center or a quadruped patrolling a power plant.

If its software or update system is compromised, an adversary might watch video feeds, record audio, map layouts, or even interfere with physical operations. That blends cyber risk with physical risk in ways older technology never did.

Supply chains, power inverters, and the China factor

The FCC’s order reaches beyond the robots themselves to include connected power inverters, the boxes that manage electricity from solar panels, batteries, and sometimes data centers.

Officials argue these inverters, when produced abroad and tied into critical infrastructure, could allow foreign actors to disrupt the power grid or key facilities during a crisis.

Offshore production of such gear, they warn, makes U.S. supply chains vulnerable to disruption or coercion at moments of maximum pressure. That concern aligns closely with worries about overreliance on adversarial nations.

Most of the affected robot makers are Chinese, and the ban slots neatly into a broader Trump administration campaign against Chinese technology, from telecommunications gear to power equipment and now mobile robots.

Chinese ministries and state media call the policy discriminatory and protectionist, accusing Washington of using security as a cover to suppress Chinese firms.

But so far, those complaints come without public technical evidence against the U.S. threat model. They attack motives, not the specific claims about data collection and remote control.

Is this about safety, or is it about control of the tech future?

For many Americans, this decision fits a pattern: treat connected Chinese hardware as a risk early, before there is a headline-grabbing attack. The FCC used similar logic against Huawei and ZTE telecom equipment, arguing that network gear from an adversarial country should never sit in the backbone that carries our data.

Critics warn of hidden costs. Foreign robots are often cheaper and more mature than some U.S. offerings. Blocking them could slow automation, raise prices, and push small firms out of advanced robotics altogether.

They argue that Washington may be using security to shape markets, pushing American industry to catch up under protection from competition.

From this viewpoint, that tension is real. Guardrails against foreign adversaries are vital, but they should be justified with clear evidence and narrowly tailored, not turned into a permanent excuse for heavy-handed industrial policy.
