The suspect, 22-year-old Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen, now faces murder charges with the possibility of the death penalty following his deadly rampage that claimed the lives of Officer Samuel Riveros and citizen Darius Wong.
Officer Samuel Riveros, a dedicated 35-year-old police officer and SWAT team member with the Baldwin Park Police Department, was killed over the weekend while responding to reports of shots fired.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman described Riveros’ heroic actions, noting that the officer put community safety above his own life.
Riveros has served his community since 2016 as a criminology graduate and field training officer, demonstrating his commitment to protecting Baldwin Park, California, citizens.
The shooter opened fire on civilian Darius Wong, a father of two young daughters, who was simply parking his car when the attack began.
After killing Wong, the suspect then turned his AR-15-style weapon, fatally shooting Riveros and injuring Officer Anthony Pimentel with glass shards.
Investigators recovered approximately 60 spent shell casings at the scene, revealing the ferocity of the attack against both innocent civilians and the police officers who rushed to help.
Law enforcement officials recovered the weapon and high-capacity magazines at the crime scene.
The brutal attack appears to have stemmed from a parking dispute between Medina-Berumen and Wong.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s own family had previously reported his erratic behavior to police, raising questions about whether this tragedy could have been prevented with proper intervention.
The criminal now faces two counts of murder and could receive life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty if convicted.
LA County DA Hochman has not yet announced whether his office will pursue the death penalty, stating that the decision will come after a thorough review process.
In addition, the community has responded with an outpouring of support for both victims’ families.
Los Angeles County flags were lowered to half-staff in honor of Officer Riveros, and a growing memorial of candles, flowers, and handwritten messages has formed at the Baldwin Park Police Department.
A Fund A Hero campaign was established to support Officer Riveros’ family, while a GoFundMe was set up to assist with Wong’s funeral costs.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the killings, with Sheriff Robert Luna calling the murders “tragic” and emphasizing that filing charges brings the community “one step closer to justice.”
As this case moves through the legal system, it serves as a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily and the importance of supporting those who put their lives on the line to protect communities from violent criminals.
Officials said Darius Wong was fatally shot just moments before Baldwin Park police officer Samuel Riveros died in a shootout with the suspect, Eduardo Medina-Berumen. https://t.co/uW6QvQkmiW
