Demolition crews working at 1515 Danforth Avenue on May 18, 1995, thought they were dealing with concrete, rebar, and old car parts. Instead, under the garage floor of the former Robertson Motors site, they uncovered something no one expected: a human skeleton buried in the soil beneath the slab.
Police arrived and quickly saw this was not a simple historical burial. The woman had been intentionally placed there, hidden under a working business where thousands would come and go above her for decades.
Investigators examined the bones and the scene and found clear signs of violence. The woman’s skull showed at least six blows from a hammer-like weapon.
That kind of repeated head injury is classic blunt-force trauma, and it left little doubt for detectives. They ruled the death a homicide, not an accident or natural death.

From “Jane Doe” to Mary McLeod Moffat
For almost 30 years, the case sat unsolved. Police had bones, a cause of death, and a hidden grave, but no name. Traditional DNA methods failed to produce a useful profile at first. The remains were old, the sample degraded, and technology in the 1990s and 2000s simply was not good enough yet.
In 2022, Toronto police selected the case for a new approach: investigative genetic genealogy, the same strategy used in some of the biggest cold cases in North America.
Specialist lab Othram received the remains and started the slow work of pulling usable DNA from bone. After multiple attempts, scientists built a strong genetic profile. That profile was compared to people who had publicly shared their DNA for family history and matching.
Genealogists then built out possible family trees, tested relatives, and lined up records. That complex map led back to one woman: Mary McLeod Moffat, born Mary Davidson in Scotland in 1905, who came to Canada with her family in 1913.
A quiet life, a sudden disappearance, and a deadly marriage
Once police had a name, they could follow the paper trail. Records showed Mary married in 1929 and had a son in 1930. She lived the kind of modest immigrant life that built cities like Toronto: work, family, church, neighbors. Then, sometime around April 1936, the trail went cold.
Historical records and family memories suggest she suddenly vanished from her normal life. There was no burial record, no clear death notice, and no sign she had simply moved away.
Detectives went back through family interviews and archival documents with fresh eyes. They focused on Mary’s marriage and what people remembered about tension in the home. Police now say the evidence points to her husband as the likely killer.
They believe a confrontation escalated into violence, that he struck her repeatedly with a hammer-like object, and then buried her under the garage where he worked or had access.
Why there will never be a trial
Even with this strong picture, there will be no courtroom drama. The husband, the suspected killer, died in 1985. You cannot prosecute a dead man, and you cannot cross-examine him.
That means no jury verdict, no formal conviction, and no chance for a defense attorney to test every thread of the case. Serious people should see that clearly: this is a powerful reconstruction, not a legal judgment. Police say he is the suspect. History will likely treat him as the killer.
The public does not see the full lab reports, chain-of-custody files, or complete genealogical charts. People trust the Toronto Police Service and Othram’s work because they have delivered accurate results in other cold cases, including identifying unknown victims and killers using the same tools.
Yet cause-of-death and “who did it” always rest on more inference than “who is this,” especially when eight or nine decades have passed.
What this case means for cold justice
This story reaches beyond one woman and one family. Across Canada and the United States, genetic genealogy is turning long-frozen files into active investigations again. Police now solve crimes against children, women, and other vulnerable victims at rates that were unthinkable in the 1980s.
At the same time, we should insist on transparency. When labs and police use private DNA databases and complex family trees to identify victims and suspects, the methods must be open to serious review. That does not mean halting the work. It means respecting both truth and civil liberty.
In Mary Moffat’s case, the balance looks sound. The science is strong, the narrative matches the evidence, and a forgotten woman finally has her name, her story, and her place in Toronto’s history again.
