(StraightShooterNews.com) – Exposing a shocking breach in national security, a former British soldier has been convicted of espionage after communicating critical classified information to Iran.
Once entrusted with sensitive information, Daniel Khalife betrayed his country by passing classified details to Iranian intelligence.
Khalife, who joined the Army at 16, was found guilty of violating Britain’s Official Secrets Act.
As a member of the Royal Corps of Signals with access to special forces and intelligence squads, he abused his position to gather and transmit sensitive information to Iran.
The gravity of Khalife’s actions cannot be overstated. Bethan David of the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized the deliberate nature of his betrayal, stating:
“He surreptitiously sought out and obtained copies of secret and sensitive information which he knew were protected and passed these on to individuals he believed to be acting on behalf of the Iranian state.”
Alarmingly, Khalife began his espionage activities at just 17 years old, passing information to a contact linked to Iranian intelligence.
Even more concerning, he was later granted NATO secret security clearance, highlighting a severe lapse in vetting.
This oversight allowed a potential enemy agent to access highly classified information, also putting the allies at risk.
“We know very well the threat that Iranians pose to the U.K.’s national security,” warned Commander Dominic Murphy, emphasizing the necessity for vigilant scrutiny and enhanced monitoring within defense systems.
Khalife’s case took an even more dramatic turn when he escaped from a London prison in September 2023, leading to a three-day manhunt.
Moreover, Khalife claimed he intended to work as a double agent for Britain, inspired by the TV show “Homeland.”
His defense lawyer likened him more to “Scooby Doo” than “James Bond,” highlighting the childish nature of his espionage.
The prosecution’s case against Khalife was built on solid evidence, including information from his mobile phones, notes, and surveillance footage.
This comprehensive approach leaves no doubt about his guilt and the extent of his betrayal.
Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb indicated that Khalife will face a long prison sentence.
