(StraightShooterNews.com) – After months of a strong lead across the country, GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is now shockingly trailing Kamala Harris by three points in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up.
According to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist survey conducted in early August 2024, Harris has 51% support compared to Trump’s 48%, with 2% of respondents undecided in a two-way race.
Harris also has a lead over Trump among independent voters, with 53% to Trump’s 44%.
In a race with multiple candidates, Harris maintains her lead at 48%, while Trump holds 45%.
Other candidates in the race include independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with 5%, Green Party’s Jill Stein at 1%, and both independent Cornel West and Libertarian Chase Oliver receiving less than 1% each.
Among independent voters, Harris extends her lead over Trump by 11 points in this multi-candidate scenario, with 48% to Trump’s 37%, and Kennedy trailing with 12%. This marks a significant improvement for Harris from earlier polling.
Just after Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race, a July 22 poll showed Trump slightly ahead of Harris in a head-to-head match, with 46% to her 45% and 9% undecided.
In a multi-candidate setting from the same July poll, Harris and Trump were tied at 42%, with Kennedy at 7%.
Earlier, a July 9-10 poll showed Biden himself narrowly leading Trump by 2 points in a head-to-head, 50% to 48%.
In a race with several candidates from that time, Trump led Biden slightly, 43% to 42%, with Kennedy at 8%, West at 3%, Stein at 2% and Oliver under 1%.
Harris’ improved standing in the polls is due to enthusiasm among Democrat voters, particularly regarding her running mate announcement.
Marist Institute for Public Opinion director Lee Miringoff commented on the shift in voter sentiment.
“Democrats have renewed enthusiasm and confidence with Harris at the top of the ticket, and the new matchup has ignited interest in the contest on both sides,” Miringoff stated.
Decision Desk HQ and The Hill’s recent national polling average shows Trump with a slight edge at 47.1% compared to Harris’s 47%.
The poll surveyed 1,513 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
