(StraightShooterNews.com) – In a concerning turn of events that put Americans’ health at risk, a new, more severe strain of Mpox was detected in San Mateo County, California, after a traveler returned from East Africa.
San Mateo County health officials stated that the infected individual is currently recovering at home with mild symptoms, and there is no evidence of the new strain spreading within the United States.
While authorities insist the risk to the public remains low, the emergence of this new strain raises concerns about potential government overreach in the name of public health.
However, this incident highlights the ongoing threat of foreign diseases entering the country through international travel.
The Mpox virus, previously known as monkeypox, has been spreading in the U.S. since 2022 following a global health emergency declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The new strain, known as clade Ib, has been rapidly spreading in several African countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Burundi.
Over 3,100 cases have been reported globally since late September. This variant is known to cause more severe symptoms and has a higher likelihood of leading to death compared to previous strains.
“Given the very low risk to the public of exposure to [the new mpox strain], the standing guidance for preventing mpox has not changed,” Dr. Kismet Baldwin-Santana said.
The mpox virus is transmitted through close contact, including sexual activity, kissing, and skin-to-skin contact.
Symptoms include blistered skin rashes, ulcers, and flu-like symptoms such as headache, backache, and muscle aches.
While health officials assure the public that the risk of exposure remains low, concerned citizens are calling for stricter border controls and enhanced screening measures for international travelers.
Moreover, officials are recommending vaccinations for certain groups, including men who have sex with men.
