(StraightShooterNews.com) – Costco workers are protesting corporate greed and threatening to strike this Friday if their demands for fair wages and benefits are not met.

With over 18,000 employees ready to leave, the retail giant faces a potential operations nightmare.

The Teamsters union, representing Costco workers, has thrown down the gauntlet. By an overwhelming 85% margin, union members voted to authorize a strike if a new labor agreement is not reached by January 31.

Costco, the retail giant known for its bulk goods and bargain prices, is not exactly in need of cash.

The company reported a staggering $254 billion in annual revenue and $7.4 billion in net profits, a 135% increase from 2018.

Yet, according to union representatives, Costco has failed to provide a meaningful counteroffer to workers’ demands for improved wages and benefits.

The potential strike could affect Costco locations nationwide, including 21 in New Jersey alone.

With 897 warehouses across the United States and Puerto Rico, the impact on American consumers could be significant.

If a deal is not reached soon, shoppers may face short-staffed stores or even closures.

“Our members have spoken loud and clear — Costco must deliver a fair contract, or they’ll be held accountable,” Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien said in a news release.

“From Day 1, we’ve told Costco that our members won’t work a day past January 31 without a historic, industry-leading agreement. Costco’s greedy executives have less than two weeks to do the right thing,” he continued.

The union’s demands are not unreasonable. They are seeking increased seniority pay, paid family leave, improved bereavement policies, more sick time, and protections against surveillance.

These are basic rights that hardworking Americans deserve, especially when working for a company as profitable as Costco.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that this potential strike is part of a larger trend of American workers standing up to corporate greed.

The Teamsters have been involved in similar actions against other big names like Amazon and Starbucks.

As the January 31 deadline looms, both sides are under immense pressure to reach an agreement.

Although the 18,000 union members may only represent 8% of Costco’s workforce, their potential walkout could have far-reaching consequences.
