HAPPENING NOW

(StraightShooterNews.com) – In a distressing development, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that monkeypox, now known as mpox, has become a global health emergency.

This declaration came as cases surged in Congo, affecting both adults and children across more than a dozen African countries.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control (Africa CDC) disclosed that Congo accounts for roughly 96% of all mpox cases and fatalities.

Children under 15 make up about 70% of these cases and 85% of the deaths, officials noted.

According to the Africa CDC, mpox outbreaks have been documented in thirteen African nations in 2024 alone.

“Today, the Emergency Committee met and advised me that in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that advice,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated.

“It’s clear that a coordinatеd, international response is essential to stop these outbreaks and save lives,” he added.

Earlier in the week, the Africa CDC also classified the mpox outbreaks as a public health emergency, citing over 500 deaths.

The continent has asked for international help to curb the virus’ sprеad since it faces a vaccine shortage as a new strain of mpox makes its way through the region.

This is not the first time mpox has been flaggеd internationally. Back in 2022, WHO also declared a global emergency after the virus appeared in over 70 countries where it had not been previously reported.

In 2022, the virus mainly affected gay and bisexual men and had a mortality rate of less than 1%.

Nearly 20% of gay men with mpox in the U.S. reported having sexual encounters with 10 or more partners in the weeks leading up to their symptoms, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

Mpox symptoms include skin rashes or mucosal lеsions that can last up to four weeks.

Other symptoms are fever, muscle aches, headaches, swollen lymph nodеs, back pain and fatigue, as described by the WHO.
