(StraightShooterNews.com) – With ties to the far left, an Alabama man has admitted to crafting and detonating a nail-filled bomb outside the state attorney general’s office earlier this year and now faces a potential 20-year prison sentence.
26-year-old Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert confessed to the charge of maliciously using an explosive device linked to the February 24 incident, which fortunately resulted in no injuries.
Attorney General Merrick Garland responded to the event, stating, “This defendant built a bomb using nails and screws as shrapnel and detonated it outside the Alabama Attorney General’s Office, endangering a public institution and members of the community.”
“Public servants should never be targeted for doing their jobs. The Justice Department will not tolerate such conduct, and we will use every resource at our disposal to prevent these attacks and hold perpetrators accountable,” Garland added.
Prosecutors have labeled Calvert as “dangerous” due to his self-reported “inability to control his own violent, aggressive impulses.”
The explosive was a homemade device that was set off in the early hours of February 24.
However, it was not until two days later that police were alerted to a suspicious package near the attorney general’s office.
The timing of the attack coincided closely with a decision by the Alabama Supreme Court regarding in vitro fertilization treatment, declaring that frozen embryos are considered children under state law in wrongful death cases.
Calvert has shown support for the far-left Antifa movement, evidenced by Antifa stickers found near the explosion site, though he denies official ties to the group.
The stickers bore slogans such as “anti-fascism is community self-defense,” “abolish private property,” “eat the rich,” “death to fascism,” “arm the homeless,” “f*** work let’s riot!” and “never work.”
Notably, one sticker combined an Antifa logo with a rainbow flag, while another replaced the letter ‘a’ in “eat the rich” with an anarchy symbol.
Both the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation into the bombing.
ATF Director Steven Dettelbach emphasized the agency’s commitment, stating, “Violent, targeted attacks like this, aim to harm, whether physically or through fear and intimidation, the civil servants and public officials who serve our communities and country.”
