(StraightShooterNews.com) – The GOP wants “Peanut’s Law” enacted to protect animal sanctuaries and pet owners from tyrannical government actions, as the state’s environmental agency raided a home, seized beloved pets and executed them without due process.

The controversy erupted when the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) stormed into Mark Longo’s home without a warrant and seized his pet squirrel, Peanut, and raccoon, Fred.

Despite Peanut’s status as a social media star with over 714,000 Instagram followers, the DEC showed no mercy, killing both animals after Peanut allegedly bit an agent.

The DEC’s actions sparked bipartisan outrage across the nation, with figures from all political spectrums condemning the unnecessary cruelty.

Even prominent conservatives like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and J.D. Vance spoke out against this blatant abuse of power, highlighting how government agencies are becoming increasingly intrusive and callous.

In response to this tragedy, Oyster Bay Republican Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz has introduced the “Peanut’s Law: Humane Animal Protection Act.”

This proposed amendment to New York’s Environmental Conservation Law aims to safeguard sanctuary animals and ensure due process before any drastic actions are taken.

“If government agencies don’t have anything better to do than seizing squirrels, then that just defies common sense,” Senator Larry Hicks (R-WY) stated.

Moreover, key provisions of Peanut’s Law include a 72-hour waiting period before euthanizing sanctuary animals, emergency appeal rights with a DEC review board, and the requirement that a licensed veterinarian confirm immediate public safety risks before any animal is put down.

The proposed law also mandates transparency, requiring the DEC to publish quarterly reports on animal seizures and release testing results within seven days if euthanization occurs.

This level of accountability is crucial in preventing future abuses of power and ensuring that government agencies act in the best interests of both animals and the public.

Chemung County man Mark Longo, who turned the rescued squirrel into a social media star, said that the DEC raided his house without a search warrant to find a squirrel.

“I was treated as if I was a drug dealer and they were going for drugs and guns,” he added.

Assemblyman Blumencranz has also called for a thorough investigation into the handling of Peanut’s case, urging Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) to take immediate action.
