(StraightShooterNews.com) – In a loss felt across the heavy metal community, Iron Maiden’s original lead singer Paul Di’Anno has passed away at his Salisbury home at the age of 66.

Known for his distinctive voice, which launched one of rock’s greatest bands, Di’Anno’s death leaves a void for fans celebrating a legacy built on passion and grit.

Born Paul Andrews on May 17, 1958, in Chingford, East London, Di’Anno left an indelible mark on the music world. His era with Iron Maiden between 1978 and 1981 is remembered for two groundbreaking albums, 1980’s “Iron Maiden” and 1981’s “Killers.”

These albums were instrumental in establishing the band in the burgeoning heavy metal scene, garnering critical and commercial success through hits like “Running Free” and “Sanctuary.”

His vibrant stage presence and vocal prowess set the stage for the band’s explosive rise.

Despite their success, the original singer’s tenure with Iron Maiden was cut short due to alleged drug use and a rock’n’roll lifestyle, eventually leading to his replacement by Bruce Dickinson.

During an interview with Metal Hammer in 2022, DiAnno said he did not “blame” Iron Maiden for firing him.

The he added, “I wish I’d been able to contribute more. After a while that got me down. In the end, I couldn’t give 100 percent to Maiden anymore and it wasn’t fair to the band, the fans, or to myself.”

Moreover, Di’Anno’s impact on Iron Maiden was recognized far beyond his time with the band. His work influenced iconic groups such as Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura, further cementing his place in music folklore.

After leaving Iron Maiden, the late singer embarked on a solo career and collaborated with several bands, including Battlezone and Killers.

His retrospective album, “The Book of the Beast,” revisited Iron Maiden’s classics, breathing new life into them through his enduring voice.

Regardless struggling with severe health issues including sepsis, knee surgery, and a cancer scare, Di’Anno continued to perform vigorously, completing over 100 shows from 2023 despite performing in a wheelchair.

Meanwhile, fans and rock legends have paid tribute, including statements from Iron Maiden praising his foundational role in their journey.

“We are all deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Paul Di’Anno earlier today. Paul’s contribution to Iron Maiden was immense and helped set us on the path we have been travelling as a band for almost five decades,” the band said.

It continued, “His pioneering presence as a frontman and vocalist, both on stage and on our first two albums, will be very fondly remembered not just by us, but by fans around the world.”
