Thomas Campbell Bolling Von Goetz’s sacrilegious rampage included dropping onions, throwing tangerines, and even desecrating holy water with whiskey.
The first act of this unholy spectacle unfolded at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Avenue, Maryland, shortly after 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Von Goetz brazenly interrupted the sacred Mass by dropping an onion in the aisle, causing immediate distress among the faithful gathered to celebrate the birth of Christ.
As if his actions were not already reprehensible enough, the man escalated his attack on innocent churchgoers.
Upon leaving Holy Angels, he committed assault by hurling tangerines at an unsuspecting individual.
Not content with disrupting one church service, Von Goetz then made his way to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Leonardtown. He committed an even more egregious act by pouring whiskey into the holy water during midnight Mass.
When parishioners attempted to escort Von Goetz out of St. Francis Xavier, he became increasingly aggressive.
He tried to assault several individuals with his whiskey bottle, further endangering the safety of those who had gathered to worship.
It was only through the bravery of church attendees that Von Goetz was finally detained until law enforcement arrived on the scene.
Now, he faces counts of second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, defacing religious property, religious crime against a group, obstructing a religious exercise, threat of mass violence, and disturbing the peace.
Moreover, this incident is not isolated but part of a disturbing trend of attacks on Christian values and religious freedom in America.
It highlights the urgent need for stronger laws to protect places of worship and punish those who seek to disrupt religious services or desecrate sacred spaces.
