(StraightShooterNews.com) – In a bombshell development, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is suing top U.S. banks JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo for failing to prevent fraud on the Zelle platform.

The lawsuit questions the banks’ responsibilities in consumer protection, sparking concerns about whether these institutions prioritize profits over people.

The agency has filed this lawsuit, claiming that the banks and Zelle’s operator neglected their duty to address rampant fraudulent activities. Allegations include failing to investigate complaints and reimburse scam victims.

The CFPB aims to secure financial compensation for affected consumers and penalties for these financial institutions.

Since Zelle launched in 2017, it has been reported that customers of these banks have suffered over $870 million in fraud losses.

Zelle, now the largest peer-to-peer payments network in the U.S., operates under Early Warning Services, co-owned by the banks being sued.

Concerns have emerged over Zelle’s quick launch to compete with platforms like Venmo and CashApp, potentially resulting in inadequate safeguards.

“The nation’s largest banks felt threatened by competing payment apps, so they rushed to put out Zelle,” CFPB Director Rohit Chopra said.

“By their failing to put in place proper safeguards, Zelle became a gold mine for fraudsters, while often leaving victims to fend for themselves,” he added.

The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations criticized these banks in a report highlighting a dismal response to scams.

In 2020, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America collectively reimbursed a mere fraction of victims. In 2023, only 12% of scam cases received compensation, showcasing a chronic issue with these financial giants.

Beyond financial losses, the CFPB lawsuit underscores how such banks violated the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E.

Such negligence allowed repeat offenders to exploit the platform’s vulnerabilities to misuse Zelle.

This past summer, these issues prompted the Senate to investigate the banks’ consumer fraud measures.

Zelle strongly refutes these accusations. Jane Khodas, a Zelle spokeswoman, defended the company’s practices, stating, “Zelle leads the fight against scams and fraud and has industry-leading reimbursement policies that go above and beyond the law.”

“Zelle leads the fight against scams and fraud and has industry-leading reimbursement policies that go above and beyond the law.”

The CFPB stressed the importance of halting these harmful practices, securing justice for consumers, and imposing hefty fines.

This legal action serves as a clarion call for corporate vigilance and consumer advocacy within the financial sector.
