(StraightShooterNews.com) – In a harrowing development, 5-time Olympian Daniela Larreal Chirinos was found dead in her Las Vegas apartment.
Larreal was a Venezuelan cyclist who competed in five Olympic Games. She reportedly choked to death after a large chunk of food got stuck in her trachea.
Authorities were alerted when the 50-year-old did not appear throughout the week for work at a Las Vegas hotel where she was employed.
Police investigations revealed that she passed away on Sunday, Aug. 11, due to asphyxiation caused by solid food lodged in her trachea.
Chirinos was a prominent figure in Venezuelan cycling from 1990 to 2012.
Her Olympic participations included the speed cycling events in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, Athens in 2004 and London in 2012.
Her career highlights include winning two gold medals in San Salvador in 2002 and two silver medals, one at the same 2002 games and another in Mexico City in 1990.
According to Fox Sports, she also won two silver medals at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo in 2003.
Additionally, she achieved three golds and a silver at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Before moving to the U.S., Chirinos had earned her degree in physical education in Venezuela.
