Biden is set to honor 20 individuals with the Presidential Citizens Medal in a White House ceremony.
This prestigious accolade, introduced by President Richard Nixon in 1969, recognizes outstanding service to the nation and fellow citizens.
Among this year’s recipients are former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney and Mississippi’s Representative Bennie G. Thompson for their leadership roles in the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack investigation.
The White House lauded Cheney for defending national ideals, and Thompson for his commitment to the rule of law.
The January 6 committee they led concluded its investigation by accusing former President Donald Trump of conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results.
As expected, Trump fiercely criticized the committee, branding it a union of “political thugs and creeps” and suggesting its leaders “should go to jail.”
“Cheney did something that’s inexcusable, along with Thompson and the people on the un-select committee of political thugs and, you know, creeps,” Trump has commented, cited by The Guardian.
Biden is not stopping at awarding medals.
Reports suggest that he is considering preemptive pardons for those who have been targeted by Trump post-investigation.
This approach highlights Biden’s leanings, continuing a trend of partisanship, and neglect of the core issues plaguing the nation.
Amidst this, several other recipients were recognized for contributions, including advancing same-sex marriage rights and transforming military medicine, further inflaming debates about the administration’s priorities.
