(StraightShooterNews.com) – Highlighting the serious dangers of letting children go about unsupervised, kids are being poisoned every day in unsuspecting ways.
According to reports from America’s Poison Control Centers, cases where children consumed and were poisoned by energy drinks by mistake rose an alarming 20% in 2023.
Energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster pack a lot more caffeine than your typical soda or coffee, and that can put kids’ lives at risk.
Both the Food and Drug Administration and the American Academy of Pediatrics warn that children and teenagers should steer clear of these high-caffeine drinks.
By doing so, children can avoid problems like caffeine poisoning or even cardiac arrest in extreme cases.
Despite this, kids sometimes end up drinking these brightly-colored beverages by accident.
In 2023, about 48% of 2,834 calls about kids consuming energy drinks were due to accidental intake.
This issue is particularly significant for children around the ages of 6 and 12, with the number of incidents nearly doubling.
Symptoms of too much caffeine might include a faster heartbeat, feeling jittery, high blood pressure, feeling overly anxious and breathing quickly.
The FDA says it is safe for adults to have up to 400 mg of caffeine a day, which is about two to three cups of coffee.
But just one can of Monster Energy has 160 mg of caffeine, and Bang goes even higher with a whopping 300 mg.
